Tutor Academy Quant Courses BSc1 2024/25 (2024)

Introduction

Are you confident in presenting and teaching quantitative subjects?

Do you speak Dutch and/or English fluently?

Can you coach and motivate students?

RSM’s Department of Technology and Operations Management is recruiting teaching assistants (TAs) to help teach the workshops and grade the exams of these Year 1 quantitative courses in the BSc Business Administration and BSc International Business Administration programmes:

  • Wiskunde/Mathematics in Block 1
  • Statistiek/Statistics in Block 2
  • Spreadsheet Modelling in Block 3b
  • Besliskunde/Quantitative Decision Making in Block 4

These courses teach methodological skills and their application for tackling business challenges. Although there are a lot of self-study opportunities, some students need extra help and/or motivation from TAs.

Being a TA can complement your own learning in your bachelor’s or master’s programme, and of course, you won’t be working for free!

Job description

  • Provide in-person workshops to go over exercises in small groups
  • Help with more advanced assignments
  • Answer other course-related questions from students
  • Help supervise computer exams
  • Grade open exam questions and the resits of these exams
  • Some administrative work such as monitoring student progress, and answering questions in Canvas forum.

We anticipate you will spend your time for one or multiple courses as follows, although the exact schedule may change slightly.

Wiskunde/Mathematics

  • Workshops in weeks 36–41 of 2024
  • Grading of exams in weeks 43–44 of 2024
  • Grading of the resit exams in weeks 51–52 of 2024

Statistiek/Statistics

  • Workshops in weeks 43–48 of 2024
  • Grading of the exams probably in weeks 50-51 of 2024
  • Grading of the resit exams probably in weeks 7–8 of 2025
  • Some work may take place before and after these dates.

Spreadsheet Modelling

  • Workshops in weeks 7–13 of 2025
  • Grading of the exams in weeks 14 and 15 of 2025
  • Grading of the resit exams in weeks 25 and 26 of 2025

Besliskunde/Quantitative Decision Making

  • Workshops in weeks 15–22 of 2025
  • Grading of the exams in weeks 24 and 25 of 2025
  • Grading of the resit exams in weeks 28 and 29 of 2025

Job requirements

TAs must be Year 2 or Year 3 BSc, or MSc students with:

  • Strong didactic skills and a high motivation to get the most out of your students;
  • Good grades in the four quantitative courses you will be assisting with, or have followed similar courses in another programme (e.g. Econometrics);
  • Availability preferably for at least two of the four courses;
  • Flexibility to be available for the workshops. (Teaching Assistants for Besliskunde/Quantitative Decision Making must be available on Thursdays for the workshops);
  • Fluency in the teaching language, Dutch and/or English;
  • A student registration and residency in the Netherlands. Very few exceptions apply. If this is not your only TA position, remember that your other work may affect whether you can be hired without exceeding the maximum number of hours that students are allowed to work.

We prefer candidates who can take on duties for two or more of the courses.

Your application can proceed only if you do not work for a tutoring company at university level anywhere else at the same time; this is due to the conflict of interest with tutoring companies. We also expect that you will not use your TA experience or knowledge of the course materials and grading, or exam information, to benefit any future involvement with a tutoring company at university level.

Employment conditions and benefits

Compensation is paid according to the student assistants’ salary scale. The hourly rate depends on your study progress. In autumn 2023, this is a gross hourly rate of €15.87–€15.90 for Year 2 and Year 3 bachelor year students, or €17.24–€17.28 for Year 4 bachelor students and master students. Please note that salary may differ slightly according to the contract for each specific vacancy.

You will receive a free half-day of didactical training that you can add to your CV.

Applying

Please submit your CV, grade list, and motivation letter via the Tutor Academy recruitment platform (please do not send your application by email).

Your motivation letter should include:

  • the courses you want to assist with and why
  • details of your native language(s)
  • the language(s) that you can teach in
  • a link to a (ideally) 3-minute video in any format of you explaining at least one exercise of your choice from an old exam of one of these four courses. You can use Panopto or an unlisted YouTube video. By experience, with the large number of applicants, it can be challenging for the reviewers to watch your video completely, so a short video to the point can be an efficient and effective strategy to present your instruction skills and style.

A final important note: please complete this form using your student email. We use the form to manage the whole selection process.

Applications are accepted until 9 June 2024.

If you have any questions, please email Zhikai Xu, coordinator of the Year 1 quantitative courses for BSc BA and BSc IBA z.xu@rsm.nl.
